The US Justice Department announced the seizure of dozens of Internet domains that could have been used by Russian intelligence to obtain valuable information about the government.

In the warrant, the agency accused the Callisto Group, which has ties to Russia, of organizing a sophisticated phishing campaign to gain access to victims' computers and email accounts.

The Justice Department said cybercriminals linked to Russia stole "valuable information, sensitive intelligence from the U.S. government," CBS News reports.

The US coordinated the takedown of 41 domains with Microsoft, which seized another 66 unique domains operated by the group.

Microsoft explained that Callisto Group has been actively conducting cyberattacks since approximately 2017.

The group has recently allegedly targeted non-profits, think tanks and officials in the US, UK, the Baltics and Europe.

Microsoft also said that seizing the domains would allow its investigators to obtain valuable information.

However, the tech firm also expects cybercriminals to create new infrastructure in the near future.
