In the future, leading countries will lay claim to one or another part of the Moon.

Russia should not remain on the sidelines and is obliged to take its place in this race, believes Anatoly Petrukovich, Director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In 2024, the Earth's natural satellite does not belong to any specific country. But soon, the issue of dividing territories will probably begin to be raised, the scientist shared his opinion in an interview with NSN .

The process will be spurred by sending people and various equipment to the Moon. In such conditions, the question of demarcation will arise by itself.

The expert believes that Russia should develop its own strategy and choose the North Pole of the satellite as its target, since it is more convenient due to the geographic location of the Russian Federation.

This will make it more convenient to maintain communication with spacecraft and carry out all other activities to develop the satellite.

The scientist noted that when the world community starts raising the issue of dividing the Moon, Russia will have its own clear strategy and position. This will allow the country not to be left "empty-handed", the expert emphasized.

Petrukovich added that, of course, a national lunar program cannot be created in isolation from the world community. Some options for cooperation should be considered.
