Scientists Create AI to Accurately Predict Volcanic Eruptions

Spanish scientists have used artificial intelligence to predict a volcanic eruption.

The scientists' development made it possible to do this in advance. Before this, it was possible to do this with some accuracy only 1-2 days before the eruption.

Geologists and physicists from the University of Granada (Spain) have predicted the eruption of Mount St. Helens in the US state of Washington, according to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science .

They calculated that an eruption would occur with a 95% probability. Scientists first collected detailed information, starting from the 1980s.

Then they trained the algorithm and asked the program to indicate when an eruption might occur.

As a result, the AI gave a fairly accurate forecast and did this 3-7 days before the eruption date.

In the next step, scientists use the program to predict an eruption that might occur in the future.

The St Helens area has been experiencing increasing seismic activity since February 2024. Over the past six months, there have been more than 350 earthquakes.

Earlier, a MUR veteran spoke about whether AI would be able to predict serial killers.
