ESET experts reported that fraudsters, using the Telegram application, began sending out Trojan malware to infect smartphones with the Android operating system.
It is emphasized that scammers disguise the virus as videos.
ESET specialists emphasized: “We are talking about APK files that are presented as embedded videos,” as reported by the Cnews.ru portal.
Despite the fact that the Telegram service itself does not consider the distribution of such videos acceptable, it has promised to strengthen the protection of its users.
Telegram is reported to automatically download media files to the device.
This is exactly how a Trojan program gets onto an Android device and subsequently infects it.
The function to disable automatic download of media files did not protect users from the risk of catching a virus on their phone.
It is emphasized that the malware looks like a "video clip" that is played using a third-party player. The infection occurred when the "open" button was pressed.
