Experts conducted an investigation and found out what actually disabled millions of computers around the world.
The failure occurred on devices that had software from CrowdStrike installed. It is designed to protect against cyber attacks.
During the investigation, it turned out that all the troubles began because of an overlooked error in the test software, which prevented the update sent to millions of devices from being properly tested.
CrowdStrike said in a statement that it had checked the software on March 5, The Verge reports. But an error in the diagnostic software did not allow it to identify a serious flaw in the program being checked.
Because of this, the problematic software was tested and distributed worldwide.
CrowdStrike representatives said they have learned from the incident and will make changes to the way they test future updates to their software.
Meanwhile, experts have calculated the approximate amount of losses that companies suffered due to the global Windows failure. The largest companies in the US lost about $5.4 billion (more than 467 billion rubles).
