Fraudsters have begun to resort to new methods of deceiving people.

Now, to achieve their goals, dishonest people hack inactive profiles in the WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).

Dmitry Chernov, Director of Customer Service and Retail Business Services at VimpelCom, told RIA Novosti journalists about this.

According to the expert, hacking of inactive accounts is necessary for fraudsters in order to start calling other users. As a result, the attackers pose as representatives of mobile operators or bank employees.

Chernyshev noted that to be more convincing, scammers change their profile photo to the company logo.

The difficulty is that hacked users often don't even suspect that fraud is being committed in their name.

The victims of such fraudulent schemes are most often elderly people whose children or grandchildren installed WhatsApp on their devices, but they ultimately never started using the application.
