Experts have explained whether a 16-digit code gives fraudsters the opportunity to steal funds from a bank card.

These figures are not enough to clean out the victim’s account, but criminal activity often begins with obtaining this information, the press service of Roskachestvo said.

The card number alone will not allow scammers to steal money. They invent various tricks to find out additional information.

Fraudsters contact potential victims by phone or instant messengers, pretending to be bank or law enforcement employees.

Fraudsters can steal money if they know the card number, CVC/CVV code (applied to the magnetic strip of the card) and SMS code that is sent to the account owner's number to confirm the transaction.

Sometimes the scammers already have all the information and all they have to do is get the SMS code that comes to the phone at the time of the transaction and is only valid for a certain time.

That's what scammers are trying to find out in various ways. Just knowing the card number doesn't give the scammers anything, Roskachestvo summed up.
