Scientists from the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Tsinghua University have reported the successful creation of artificial skin.
As the researchers themselves explained, they were inspired in their development by the sensory capabilities of the platypus.
Experts emphasized: “Such skin will help improve the tactile capabilities of prostheses and robotic systems,” as reported by the foreign portal Techxplore .
It is reported that the development can perceive tactile stimuli. In addition, it has the ability to collect information from a distance.
It is also indicated that the innovation imitates the electroreception and mechanoreception of an animal such as the platypus.
The platypuses themselves are best known for their unique dual sensory system.
This kind of perception allows the animal to easily detect prey, as well as successfully avoid collisions with dangerous predators.
The scientists added: "The artificial skin we have developed is highly sensitive. Its receptors read information with almost 100% certainty."
