Nina Ostanina responded to the call of priest Maxim Minyailo to abolish maternity capital in Russia.
The Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection believes that instead of canceling it, it is necessary to expand the areas of its use.
Ostanina explained that 90% of the maternity capital funds go towards the initial payment for purchasing housing, the publication Lenta.ru emphasizes.
She also said it was the only way for many families to get housing.
The deputy emphasized that Russians use maternity capital for their children’s education.
She suggested using maternity capital to purchase Russian cars or to manage these funds independently.
Ostanina also recalled that 20% of families with children can only afford food.
In her opinion, financial support from the state is necessary, especially for low-income families.
The deputy stated that under current conditions, the abolition of maternity capital is premature.
