The parties of the Bundestag have refused to give confidence to the current Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz.

The decision paved the way for early elections to the German parliament.

On Monday, December 16, the leaders of parliamentary factions discussed the issue of a vote of confidence in Scholz, TASS reports.

The opposition accused the head of government of undermining trust, sabotaging the work of the ruling coalition and prolonging the political crisis.

Following the discussion, a vote was held. 207 deputies out of 717 present voted for the current chancellor.

Now on the agenda in Germany are early parliamentary elections, which are expected to take place on February 23.

As for the post of Chancellor of Germany, one of the main candidates for this post is considered to be 69-year-old Friedrich Merz, who is the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The political crisis in Germany began in November 2024. The government began to crack after Finance Minister Christian Lindner left his post.
