A fire broke out in the Georgian parliament building, which protesters threw firecrackers at.

The fire in the window was accompanied by loud approval from the crowd.

Smoke began to billow from another window of the building, where the protesters were most likely aiming the fireworks, RIA Novosti reported.

The protesters also lit a fire in front of the parliament building.

A crowd of opposition supporters blocked the square adjacent to the parliament and the roadway of Rustaveli Avenue on Saturday.

Police stopped traffic to avoid congestion and accidents.

Law enforcement officers maintained order on the side street and at the entrance to the building from the rear.

Some of the protesters tried to throw firecrackers towards the special forces formation and fired them into the inner courtyard of the parliament.

Protests have spread across Georgia following Prime Minister Kobakhidze's announcement that EU membership talks would be suspended.

The protesters who attacked the police were taken to police stations and detained under hooliganism charges.

The republic's authorities announced a violent seizure of power in the country by opposition supporters.
