Russia responds to new Japanese Prime Minister's remarks on signing peace treaty

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexei Chepa expressed doubts about the conclusion of a peace treaty with Japan.

His comments followed a statement by Japan's new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

He stated that Japan wants to resolve the territorial issue and conclude a peace treaty with Russia, writes Lenta.ru .

Chepa said he did not see much prospect in concluding a peace treaty with Japan.

He noted that statements by Japanese leaders often appear contradictory.

Chepa also stressed that the issue of a peace treaty had been discussed for many years.
