Countries that have ratified the UN Convention are involved in the process of determining where the boundaries of the underwater continental shelves lie.

These markers are important because they are the basis for exclusive economic rights to marine resources.

Russia, Canada and Denmark have filed competing claims to areas in the Arctic over climate change and exploration conditions, Bloomberg reports.

Russia emphasizes that the claims of the United States, which has not ratified the UN Convention, threaten the integrity of the agreements.

The US wants to add about 1 million square kilometers to its continental shelf in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

The Chinese delegate also said that the US has no right to make such demands unilaterally.

Russia and China have similar positions on international issues, including the Arctic.

At the same time, the Pentagon published a new Arctic strategy, emphasizing that this cooperation carries risks.

The United States also emphasizes that claims to the continental shelf are justified in accordance with the rules of the convention.
