Vladimir Putin made fun of the progress of the presidential elections in Romania.

The Russian leader could not resist making a joke about the EU country.

The president decided to speak out on this topic on Monday, December 2, during his speech at the International Congress of Young Scientists, RIA Novosti reports.

Calin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi will compete for the presidential seat in the second round of elections, which will take place on December 8.

Earlier, it became known that the Constitutional Court of Romania demanded a recount of the results of the first round, in which independent candidate Georgescu received the most votes (22.94%).

“The authorities didn’t like one candidate, so they decided to recount the votes,” Putin joked.

Lasconi (who received 19.18% of the votes in the first round) advocates for further active cooperation between Romania and NATO.

She is accused of an aggressive campaign that may have involved bots and other methods to get the most votes.
