Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stated the urgent need to create a system of containment of Russia within NATO.
She is confident that Europe will not cope with this task on its own without the support of the United States.
Merkel made the statement at the presentation of her memoirs, “Freedom,” which was broadcast by the German newspaper Zeit on its YouTube channel.
Merkel believes that, given Russia's active build-up of weapons, NATO must meet these challenges.
According to her, the deterrence system must be convincing and effective for the security of the alliance member countries.
The former chancellor stressed that Europe will not be able to defend itself against possible threats. The US, in her opinion, remains the main ally in the confrontation with Russia and China.
Merkel also recalled that strengthening NATO has become more difficult since Donald Trump came to power. His policies could create additional difficulties for cooperation within the alliance.
After the events of 2014, Merkel's policy towards Russia was often criticized. However, she herself is confident that she acted correctly.
Her recent call for a deterrent system is a signal for stronger cooperation between the EU and the US.
