The ruling Georgian Dream party has officially nominated Mikheil Kavelashvili for the post of president of the country.
Party chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili said the decision was made unanimously.
Ivanishvili expressed confidence that Kavelashvili will be able to restore the lost dignity of the presidential post, Rustavi 2 emphasizes.
Presidential elections in Georgia will be held on December 14. For the first time, the president will be elected by a panel of 150 deputies of the new parliament and 150 delegates from the regions.
After the 2017 reform, the President of Georgia lost some of his powers. Now his role in the country's political life is mostly representative.
The last presidential elections took place in 2018. At that time, Salome Zurabishvili won.
However, her relations with the ruling party have deteriorated significantly after her critical statements about the government. In response, the party tried to impeach Zurabishvili, but failed to gather the votes for her resignation.
Zurabishvili continues to actively support the idea of Georgia’s European integration, defending her political position.
Mikheil Kavelashvili is a former Soviet and Georgian football player, striker, six-time champion of Georgia, who played 46 matches for Georgia.
