US President Joe Biden has explained his decision not to run for re-election.

He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to keep the nation's attention on Trump and to unite Democrats ahead of the election.

Biden said he has an important commitment he must make to the country, CBS News reports.

The president explained his words this way: “We must do the most important thing – defeat Trump.”

Biden told the publication's reporters that he withdrew his candidacy not because of concerns from fellow Democrats or calls from the people.

He stressed that he had to do what was most important for the country. Harris' support could ensure the Democrats' victory in the elections.

Biden added that nothing can stand in the way of saving democracy in the United States, including his desire to run for a second term.
