Two Russian women were caught smuggling jewelry at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport.

Jewelry worth 21 million rubles was confiscated from them, the Federal Customs Service (FCS) of Russia reports.

The women were heading to Thailand via China. At the airport, they intended to pass through the "green" corridor, but were detained.

An inspection was carried out, during which customs officers found 504 items subject to declaration in the baggage and hand luggage.

The Russian women were taking rings, bracelets, earrings, pendants, precious and semi-precious stones to Thailand, the FCS website reports.

At the same time, the women tried to convince the airport employees that the discovered objects were of no particular value and were just “pieces of glass.”

But customs officials conducted an examination, which valued the cargo at 21 million rubles.

These are products made of 585 gold and 925 silver with diamonds, tourmaline, corundum, amethyst and many other valuable stones.

Women may face 5 to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 1 million rubles for smuggling jewelry.

Earlier, a woman was detained in Moscow on suspicion of credit fraud.
