A stretch ceiling allows you to achieve a very interesting design effect, but it is a structure that requires periodic maintenance - especially in rooms such as a kitchen or bathroom.
How to wash stretch ceilings?
There are stretch ceilings on the market whose manufacturers claim that they do not require maintenance.
In fact, sooner or later almost any stretch ceiling gets dirty, especially if it is located in rooms exposed to moisture, such as the kitchen and bathroom.
Therefore, despite the fact that modern ceilings are made of materials that are very resistant to various types of contamination, for example, due to an antistatic coating, they will usually still need to be cleaned after several years of use.
Kitchen – oil used for cooking can settle on the ceiling. Also, this room has high humidity.
Bathroom – if ventilation is poor, water can constantly settle on the ceiling, causing stains and other marks on its surface.
If you decide to wash a stretch ceiling, you need to familiarize yourself with several rules.
First of all, you should avoid:
using hot water for washing – the temperature should not exceed 40°C,
use of rough cloths,
use of aggressive detergents, for example, acetone-based (this ingredient can dissolve PVC film!),
use of hard or sharp instruments (eg brushes),
using a mop,
using a stain remover.
If the ceiling needs wet cleaning, it will be necessary to use a suitable care product. Choose one of the products designed for cleaning stretch ceilings.
They usually come in aerosol form. You can also use household cleaners such as dishwashing liquid, gray soap, laundry detergent or gel (just dilute the product in water).
It is also permissible to use glass cleaners containing ammonia – they allow you to effectively get rid of grease and dust without leaving streaks.
You can also make a solution with ammonia yourself by mixing 50 ml of ammonia with 1 liter of water.
Before you start washing the ceiling with a cleaning agent, test it on a small area - apply the solution to the material, wait 10-15 minutes and rinse with water. If the surface is not damaged, you can wash the entire ceiling with this solution.
To wash a stretch ceiling, you need a ladder, a bucket, a sponge or rag, and a cleaning solution. A bottle with an atomizer will also come in handy – it will make it easier to distribute the cleaning solution over the ceiling. The sponge should be soft, the fabric should be similar – preferably microfiber or suede.
The stretch ceiling can be washed in two ways: dry or wet. Dry cleaning is effective if there are no greasy stains on the ceiling surface, but only minor dirt and dust. Wet washing is necessary for more complex dirt.
Dry cleaning of the ceiling allows, first of all, to freshen up the ceiling a little by removing dust from it. Therefore, such a procedure can be carried out quite often. We use a soft cloth made of microfiber, suede or fabric with electrostatic properties.
The last type of fabric is especially worth considering, because it attracts dirt and does not leave any stains. Remove dust from the surface with circular movements.
You can also use a vacuum cleaner, but only if you have a special fabric attachment, and even then you should not touch the surface of the stretch ceiling directly (this can damage the structure). The attachment should be located at a distance of several centimeters from the ceiling.
If there are greasy stains or other difficult stains on the ceiling, the surface should first be vacuumed with a dry cloth or vacuum cleaner, and then proceed to the wet washing process. How to do this?
Pour the detergent into a bucket of water at a temperature of 30-40°C and mix it all up.
Wet a sponge or cloth in the solution. You can also pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray it directly onto the ceiling.
Clean the ceiling surface using circular motions, being careful not to press too hard on the cloth/sponge.
After washing the ceiling with detergent, it should be rinsed with ordinary water to avoid leaving streaks.
The last step is to dry the washed surface with a dry, clean cloth.
