Former head of Russian city suspected of embezzling over 221 million rubles

The official embezzled funds allocated for the construction of a water intake and treatment facilities.

The former head of the Moscow region city district of Shatura, Aleksey Artyukhin, has been detained on suspicion of this.

Investigators learned that the 49-year-old former mayor may be involved in the embezzlement of 221.5 million rubles.

Senior assistant to the head of the regional headquarters of the Investigative Committee of Russia Olga Vradiy reported that at this stage a search was conducted at the suspect’s place of work.

In addition, his car was inspected. Investigative officers are working with the detainee.

The Telegram channel of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the region states that FSB and Ministry of Internal Affairs officers have been involved in the work, with assistance provided by the Russian National Guard.

Artyukhin has been the head of Shatura since 2020. The official announced on July 10 that he was leaving his post. At the same time, he noted that the decision "was not made easily."
