The Chinese merchant ship Yi Peng 3 has remained at anchor in the Baltic Sea for more than a week under military and coast guard surveillance.

The travel ban was imposed after two underwater fibre optic cables were severed.

A group of investigators from Finland, Sweden and Lithuania are trying to determine whether this was a deliberate act by the ship's crew, The Wall Street Journal emphasizes.

Swedish police have completed their investigation but have not released their findings.

American intelligence believes that the cables were not cut intentionally. However, European authorities do not rule out the possibility of sabotage.

The incident has Europe worried amid other acts of sabotage attributed to Russian intelligence.

The Chinese ship Yi Peng 3 left the Russian port of Ust-Luga on November 15. The first cable was damaged on November 17, and the second on November 18.

The damage disrupted some data transmissions, but internet connections in EU countries were not cut off.
