The yacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast of Sicily and belonged to the deceased British businessman Mike Lynch, may have contained confidential intelligence data.

The ship, which lies on the seabed at a depth of about 50 meters, has waterproof safes containing two highly encrypted hard drives.

Sources say the disks contain highly classified information, passwords and other sensitive data,CNN reports.

Law enforcement officials fear that debris that will be raised to the surface may be of interest to foreign governments, including Russia and China.

Police have demanded that the yacht be closely guarded above water and with underwater surveillance.

Italian prosecutors believe Bayesian may contain highly sensitive data linked to Western intelligence.

Businessman Lynch was linked to British, American and other intelligence agencies through the Darktrace cybersecurity network.

Once the survey is complete, the divers will provide recommendations on how to ensure that no confidential data falls into the wrong hands.
