The US Department of Defense leadership has decided to strengthen its contingent in the Middle East.
Information about the transfer of additional forces appeared against the backdrop of Israel's operation against Lebanon.
The Pentagon's decision was announced by press secretary Pat Ryder. The major general's statement was cited by the Associated Press .
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin held several telephone conversations with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Galant, he said.
The American official called on Tel Aviv to cease fire and take a step toward reducing tensions in the region.
Against this backdrop, Washington has decided to deploy additional forces to the Middle East. The number of forces and the tasks assigned to these units are not disclosed.
Ryder noted that the situation in the region continues to escalate, and the likelihood of a wider conflict has increased.
"I don't think it's started yet, but it's a dangerous situation," the Pentagon spokesman said.
Previously, the State Department had urged Americans in Lebanon to leave the country while they could still use commercial flights.
Washington warned that in the long term the embassy would probably not be able to help those who wanted to stay.
