The debate over nuclear power in Choczew, a farm- and forest-dotted town in northern Poland, is very real.

Some residents welcome the prospect of cleaner, cheaper energy, while others are panicking about reactors near their homes.

Plans are underway in Poland to place three American-made Westinghouse reactors on the Baltic Sea, the New York Times reports.

They are planned to be built in the Khoczewo area, just 10 miles from the abandoned ruins of an unfinished Soviet plant.

Andrew Light, assistant secretary of energy for international affairs in the Biden administration, said the reactors should help European countries reduce their dependence on Russian energy.

In Poland, the overwhelming majority of citizens support the idea of building a nuclear power plant.

But some Poles are horrified by the reactors on their doorstep, saying the American plants should go elsewhere.
