Canadian miners have claimed one of the most important gem finds ever.

Lucara Diamond employees have mined one of the largest diamonds in history.

The company's website says the discovery was made at a deposit in Botswana.

The rough stone weighs 2,492 carats (498.4 g). The company emphasized that such a find speaks to the enormous potential of the Karowe mine (northeast Botswana).

Lucara also noted that mining large diamonds is easier and more efficient using its advanced Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology.

It involves the use of X-rays to detect and extract massive nuggets.

XRT has already helped to produce diamonds in Botswana such as the Sewelo (1,758 carats) and the Lesedi La Rona (1,109 carats).

In addition, the company emphasized that diamond mining is an important support for Botswana's economy.

Thanks to the income from stone mining, the country has the means to develop education and healthcare.
