In the US, a mass poisoning at McDonald's has left one dead and dozens injured.

One person has died and 49 have fallen ill after a major E. coli outbreak linked to Quarter Pounder burgers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the outbreak has spread to 10 Western states, Le Monde reports.

The health agency said in a statement that dozens of people, including a child, were taken to hospital.

Doctors diagnosed the victims with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious disease that damages blood vessels and kidneys.

Colorado's first elderly death reported.

All victims were found to have the same strain of E. coli.

Patients ate McDonald's Quarter Pounders with cheese, onions and pickles before symptoms developed.
