The sea creatures sank a sailing ship with British people on board.

The incident took place in the Strait of Gibraltar off the coast of Spain.

The details were reported by the kingdom's naval service on its social media page.

The sailboat Bonhomme William, which had three people on board, collided with killer whales. Rescuers received a message that the vessel was sinking.

The Tenerife rescue centre mobilised the Enif ship, which rescued the sailing ship's crew.

Experts believe that the ship was attacked by a subpopulation of killer whales. Their number is only 15 individuals and is called "Gladys".

They live off the coast of Spain and periodically attack small ships. The first such incident occurred in May 2020.

There are two versions of this behavior of killer whales. It is either a playful display of curiosity, or a fight with potential competitors for their favorite delicacy - bluefin tuna.
