Explosion rocks Germany's largest chemical plant

An explosion occurred at the plant of the world's largest chemical concern.

The emergency occurred on the territory of an enterprise that belongs to the BASF company.

The incident occurred on Monday, July 29, in the southwestern German city of Ludwigshafen, Reuters reports.

The explosion and subsequent fire occurred at approximately 12:00 (13:00 Moscow time). As a result of the incident, 14 people were injured.

There are no casualties reported. All the injured are plant workers.

The BASF concern is in no hurry to make statements about the causes of the incident. Investigators will determine whether it was a manufacturing error or sabotage.

The fire was extinguished within a few hours. Environmental monitoring machines recorded a slight excess of hydrocarbons in the area of the plant.

The BASF administration assured that there is no danger to the health of city residents.

Shares in the chemical giant fell 2.8% after news of the incident broke.
