China's Defense Minister Jun Suspected of Corruption
Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun is under investigation as part of a probe into corruption in the PLA.
The investigations were launched under orders from President Xi Jinping, who is investigating senior military officials.
The details of the anti-corruption investigations have not yet been disclosed, the Financial Times article emphasizes. This is the third Chinese defense minister in a row to be suspected of corruption.
Dong Jun replaced General Li Shangfu, who was removed after seven months. It was later revealed that Li Shangfu was also under investigation.
Corruption investigations could undermine Xi Jinping's confidence in the military's ability to strike Taiwan, Air Force sources say.
Dong Jun was appointed Minister of Defense in late 2023. Prior to that, he held senior positions in the Chinese Navy.
At the moment, the Chinese authorities are keeping the investigation under wraps. The investigation is expected to determine the reasons for bribery in the People's Liberation Army of China.
