A plane was delayed for five days in Portugal after 130 hamsters escaped from cages in the cargo hold.

The flight was suspended for five days after 130 hamsters escaped from their wooden cages on the plane.

Loaders spotted hamsters wandering around the cargo hold of an Airbus 320 after the plane landed at an airport in the Azores. Details of the incident are reported by The Sun .

Workers have been working hard to catch the rodents, which could damage electrical cables, since their mass escape on Tuesday.

The hamsters were said to have been part of a shipment to a pet store on the island, along with ferrets and birds.

Authorities began catching the hamsters after passengers left the plane and collected their luggage.

Due to a mass escape of hamsters, the plane was forced to remain at the airport instead of flying to Lisbon.

Following this incident, airlines required that hamsters and other small animals be transported in containers made of durable materials with a secure locking system.
