Zosimov Day: What can and cannot be done on this holiday - note for Orthodox Christians

21.08.2024 00:05

Today, Orthodox believers celebrate the transfer of the relics of Zosima and other saints who are recognized by the church as miracle workers.

Among the people, this celebration is called Zosimov Day.

In Rus', on this day it was customary to complete gardening chores.

Saint Zosima was born on Solovetsky Island in the village of Tolvuye. His birth, in particular, occurred in a pious family that lived on the shore of Lake Onega.

Zosima was passionate about religion from childhood. It was for this reason that he took monastic vows very early and went to serve for the good of religion.

Zosima had been looking for a secluded place to pray for a long time. It was this search that led him to the coast of the White Sea.

There the future saint subsequently met other believers who soon became his constant companions.

Eventually, the believers set sail together. They found the Solovetsky Islands and moored there, seeing a church located there.

The saints, who later became miracle workers thanks to their religious beliefs, found their refuge in this very temple.

What you shouldn't do on Zosim's Day

On this day, many people followed certain rules:

  • did not argue, especially with loved ones;
  • did not quarrel with strangers, did not exhaust themselves with grievances;
  • didn't do homework.

It was on August 21 that it was considered a grave sin to commit ungodly acts, namely, to make plans for the future. Otherwise, according to beliefs, they would hardly come true later.

What can you do on Zosim's Day?

Next, you need to bake a berry pie, which is worth treating your loved ones to.
