Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the holy martyr Mamant.

Among the people, this celebration is called the Day of the Martyr Mamant.

In Rus', on this day it was customary to treat domestic animals, especially goats, with great care.

Mamas was born into a family of noble Christians named Theodotus and Rufina. The boy was born and raised in Paphlagonia. At that time, there was a strong persecution of Christians.

However, the family did not fear reprisals, for which they later paid: all three were thrown into prison.

Theodotus was seriously ill, so he asked the Lord for death before torture. The Almighty listened to him and took his soul. Rufina died after that.

Mamant eventually survived and was given to the family of a wealthy Christian woman, Ammia, who had been widowed a little earlier.

In the end, Emperor Democritus himself decided to deal with the devoutly religious child. He sent the boy to the Emperor Aurelian for trial.

The trial ended with a death sentence for the believer.
