Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the martyr Eusignius of Antioch.
Among the people, this celebration is called the Forefeast of the Transfiguration.
In Rus', on this day it was customary to harvest and begin preparing supplies for the winter.
Eusignius of Antioch lived in the 3rd century AD. He served as a soldier under many Roman emperors.
Thus, in particular, the future saint defended the interests and lives of Diocletian, Maximilian, Hercules, Constantius Chlorus and Constantine the Great.
Eustignius remained a warrior until a shining cross appeared to him in the sky. Then the future saint realized that he had to change his life in the name of serving Christ.
Eustignius returned to Antioch, his historical homeland, after which he took up godly deeds.
Thus, in particular, he began to spend his time in constant prayer. He was baptized and went on a journey to various churches.
The future saint set many pagans on the right path. However, when Julian the Apostate came to power and revived idolatry, Eustignius was found by the imperial guard and executed.
On this day, many people followed certain rules:
It was on August 18 that it was considered a grave sin to commit ungodly acts, namely, to wear black clothes. Otherwise, according to beliefs, one could bring upon oneself problems with luck.
Today it is recommended to go to church services.
First, you need to prepare the apples, which should then be blessed in the church.
You also need to prepare apples for the winter, for example, dry them or make compote from them.
