Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of Saint Athanasius of Athos.

Among the people, this celebration is called Afanasyev Day.

In Rus', on this day it was customary to watch the moon in the sky.

In addition, it was necessary to carefully monitor one’s own harvest and seedlings.

Athanasius the Athonite was born in the city of Trebizond. He became an orphan early, but was eventually adopted by a nun. Thus, the future saint was imbued with Christian teachings.

Subsequently, Athanasius, having firmly decided on the nature of his occupation, took monastic vows at the Kiminsky Monastery.

The young monk went to a secluded place near the monastery with the aim of spending time in silent prayer, in communication with the Almighty.

During this act, Athanasius was overcome by demons, they tried to tempt the preacher and instill in him hatred of Christianity, but he did not give in.

The saint endured a whole year of seclusion and prayer, after which the Lord rewarded him with the gift of tenderness. Pilgrims began to flock to his cell in the future.

According to belief, the image of the Holy Mother of God herself once appeared to Athanasius.
