Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the great martyrs Sophia and Irina.
People call this celebration Arina Shipovnitsa.
In Rus', on this day it was customary to carefully monitor the words spoken.
Sofia and Irina lived in the 3rd century AD. It is not known for certain from which families they came.
However, women were devout Christians in the era of the rise of idolatry.
Sophia and Irina preached the teachings of the Savior, despite the risk of possible reprisals against them. They possessed the gift of persuasion and won many pagans over to Christianity.
Despite their meek nature, the women were good preachers. Many people followed them and were eventually baptized.
One day, the pagan ruler of Egypt, Claudius, learned about the believers. He ordered the capture of Sophia and Irene, after which he tried to persuade the women to the side of idolatry.
But the believers firmly refused such a proposal. In the end, they were beheaded.
On this day, many people followed certain rules:
It was on October 1 that it was considered a grave sin to commit acts against God, namely, to slander. Otherwise, according to beliefs, one could bring deprivation upon oneself.
Today it is recommended to go to the temple and ask the higher powers for a way out of a difficult situation.
In addition, one should help the poor or needy. This will be met with reciprocal grace.
This day is also perfect for spending it with your family.
