Stress can more than double your chances of developing grey hair by age 30, according to a study.

Anxiety and depression probably affect follicles more than smoking, diet and exercise.

Statistics show that half of people go grey by the age of 50, but many develop silver hair years or even decades earlier, The Sun reports.

The study says the exact causes are unclear, but the stress hormone cortisol may trigger scalp inflammation.

Scientists from Saudi Arabia compared rates of graying among 1,193 people aged 18 to 29.

The results of the study showed that 50% of respondents at the age of 20 had at least one grey hair, and every eighth had more than 100.

Scientists believe that anxiety increased the chances of developing grey hair by 2.24 times, while depression increased the chances of developing grey hair by 2.56 times.

The main factor was hereditary predisposition.

Smoking also nearly doubles the risk, but eating right reduces it by 32 percent.

The study authors emphasize that positive lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk of premature graying.
