Many people care about ear hygiene. They clean their ears regularly, using special sticks.

Not everyone knows that cotton swabs can do more harm than good.

You should not use "smart" and regular cotton swabs, as this can damage the eardrum. The Moscow Agency reports details with reference to Valery Mishchenko, an employee of the Sverzhevsky Research Institute of Ophthalmology and Microbiology of the Moscow Health Department.

It is noted that cotton swabs can cause injury to the external auditory canal. Given this, it is better to consult an otolaryngologist to clean your ears.

According to the specialist, "smart sticks" are now available. These devices have cameras, but they will not help to see the eardrum.

He noted that only a person with special knowledge will be able to use the “smart” wand correctly.

The doctor also recommended not to insert a cotton swab into a child's ear, even if an object is stuck there. Otherwise, it can lead to problems such as hearing loss and severe intracranial complications.

He added that the ears do not require special care, since the wax comes out when swallowing or chewing. However, if a person has a lot of wax in the ear, then it is worth visiting an otolaryngologist twice a year.
