It's no secret that watermelons and melons are seasonal fruits.

And since the ripening time of melons is limited to the period from the end of July to the beginning of September, it is believed that eating them earlier is simply harmful.

Let's figure out if this is really true and how to enjoy delicious food ahead of time.

Why it is not recommended to eat out-of-season fruits

In order for the melon crop to ripen ahead of schedule, nitrates can be used for its cultivation.

If you eat a lot of foods containing nitrates, you can get food poisoning.

However, there are life hacks on how to choose a truly ripe watermelon or melon, and then the risk of poisoning from them will be reduced to zero.

For example, the ripeness of a watermelon is indicated by its appearance. The tendril and stalk of the fruit should be dry and yellow-brown. This indicates that the fruit is ripe and can no longer absorb moisture.

In the case of melon, do not buy it under any circumstances if the fruit does not smell. The characteristic aroma of the melon should be felt even through the skin, and this is a sign that the fruit is ripe.
