Currant bushes can grow in the same place for quite a long time.

However, over time, you may notice that the plant's yield has deteriorated.

Agronomist Anastasia Kovrizhnykh suggested a trick that will help solve this problem.

Updating the bush

You can improve the yield of old currants by pruning them to the stump.

To do this, the bush must be cut almost to ground level.

Using a saw, the bushes need to be carefully cut down, leaving small stumps. Their size can be from five to ten centimeters.

What to consider

It is important to choose the right time to carry out such a procedure.

It is advisable to do this either in early spring or late autumn.

If the procedure is carried out in the spring, then the bushes must be trimmed before the sap starts to flow. Otherwise, it will not bring the desired result.

As a result, the plant will not have the strength to grow new branches.

If pruning is carried out in autumn, it is better to do it in November.

Things to remember

In the spring, young shoots will begin to appear. Therefore, currants will require enhanced feeding.

You should also not neglect treatment against various pests and diseases.

As a result, with proper care, currants will once again begin to delight with a large and rich harvest.
