Growing melons in your garden can be challenging due to the unpredictability of the weather at the end of the gardening season.

Many gardeners are faced with the problem of fruits cracking right in the garden.

Let's figure out why this might be happening.

Melons crack in the garden for the following reasons:

  • Lack of moisture. Ripening fruits should receive moisture at least twice a week.
  • Excess nutrients. Fruits can crack in the garden if you overfeed them with fertilizers.
  • Temperature fluctuations. Late summer is sometimes characterized by low temperatures in the morning and hot temperatures during the day, which also leads to cracking of the fruit.
  • Growing melons in a greenhouse. Despite the favorable conditions for growing melons, they can also crack in a greenhouse.

To avoid rotting and cracking, experienced summer residents and gardeners place a board under each fruit so that they do not touch the ground.

During ripening, it is better to shade the plants, so melons are often grown next to burdocks, which take the brunt of the light.
