Why Dahlias Don't Bloom: These 4 Mistakes Many Make

Typically, dahlias begin to form buds in midsummer.

However, if it’s August outside and there’s still no sign of buds, it’s time to find out what mistakes were made when growing flowers.

Common Mistakes in Growing Dahlias

Problems with dahlia flowering most often arise due to improper care.

In particular, they may not bloom because the flowers do not have enough light. Even a small shadow can lead to a disaster, so it is worth getting rid of those plants in time that can block the sun's rays from the dahlias.

Mistakes in watering also lead to the absence of flowers. Dahlias are not only light-loving, but also water-loving, which is why the soil in your flowerbed should always be moist. However, overwatering should not be allowed.

Tall and medium-sized flowers need to have their tops removed, otherwise the plants will put all their energy into forming a single flower.

To do this, when the plant produces 4-5 true leaves, remove the top with your fingers.

Another common mistake is improper fertilizing. For example, if you overfeed dahlias with nitrogen, you may not get any flowers. However, there will also be no flower stalks if you do not feed the plant with phosphorus and potassium.
