September is the time when summer residents need to take care of planting onions and garlic for the winter.

Let's figure out what nuances need to be taken into account before doing this.

When to plant winter onions and garlic

First, it is important to choose the right site for planting. It should be a bed that is not flooded in the spring, where these crops have not grown for two years (it is not recommended to grow onions and garlic in the same place for two years in a row).

Garlic and onions do not like acidic soils, so it is recommended to add dolomite or limestone flour to deacidify them.

For sowing, you should select the largest cloves: this is a guarantee that the subsequent harvest will also produce large heads.

Moisture plays a key role in the rooting of plants. That is why, if autumn is rainy, natural moisture will be enough. Otherwise, the beds will need to be watered 2-3 times before planting.

After the first frosts, future onions and garlic need to be mulched. Mown grass or sawdust are excellent mulch materials.
