In August, currant buds are formed for the next year.
If the goal is to get a solid harvest next year, then you need to act now.
The whole range of activities is quite wide, but there are two main actions that definitely need to be done with currants in August.
We are talking about pruning and fertilizing. First, prune, then fertilize. You shouldn't delay pruning, because the bushes need to prepare for winter.
They take a sharp pruning shear and systematically rid the bushes of unnecessary “ballast”: diseased, damaged and old thick shoots of a brown color with a coating.
It is also worth getting rid of extra basal shoots inside the bush. Excessive thickening is not at all beneficial. Strong annual shoots are shortened by 5-8 cm.
Before applying fertilizer, you can loosen the soil a little. There is no point in feeding currants for the winter, especially with nitrogen compounds.
Therefore, take 1 tbsp. of superphosphate and potassium sulfate and dissolve in a bucket of water. Add a glass of wood ash, mix and apply under the root.
At the end of the season, some summer residents additionally carry out treatments against pests and diseases.
To avoid these troubles, it is worth growing varieties that are resistant to various misfortunes.
Among them, for example, are “Vernissage”, “Emerald Necklace” (black), “Ural Beauty”, “Red Dutch” (red), “Imperial Yellow”, “Pink Pearl” (white).
