What is better to plant: rhododendrons or hydrangeas

If you are choosing between rhododendron and hydrangea, keep in mind that the first plant is usually preferable for large and large-scale gardens.

Rhododendron lives on average ten years longer. And some species can decorate the garden for about a hundred years.

Another reason why azalea (as some species of rhododendron are called) is loved by large-scale gardeners is that the plant combines not only with shrubs (like hydrangea), but also with trees, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

For small garden plots and flower beds, hydrangea is often chosen. It usually blooms longer and begins to bloom abundantly on average 1-2 years earlier than rhododendron. But if you live in a region that is not often spoiled with warmth, then it is better to choose rhododendron (its winter hardiness is usually higher).

You can choose one or another plant against all odds. For example, you can find varieties of rhododendron that bloom both in summer and early autumn (repeatedly). Or you can choose a more winter-hardy variety of hydrangea.

It is best to first decide what conditions you are willing to provide for the plants, and then choose.

For example, you like the liana with flowers of the petiolate hydrangea. It can decorate a fence, a gazebo, and a wall.

But you won't be able to afford this plant if frosts are a common occurrence in your region. Or your attention was drawn to the large-leaved hydrangea. But you only have a shady flowerbed at your disposal. And this beauty needs not only shade, but also light.

You don't have to choose at all. In fact, both plants grow well together. Their need for moisture is moderate. The plants equally like acidic soil.
