With the right approach to growing beets, they can please the gardener with a bountiful harvest.

This vegetable is not only tasty, but also a real storehouse of vitamins and minerals, which makes it an indispensable element of a healthy diet.

The key to success in growing beets is knowing the optimal time for planting them in open ground, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

Optimal planting times

For southern regions: the best time is from late March to early April.
For cool climate areas: planting is recommended from late April to mid-May.
Conditions for successful landing:

  • Air temperature: should be no less than +10-12°С.
  • Soil temperature: optimal at +8°C.

Preparing seeds for planting

  • Soaking seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours.
  • Germination in damp cloth at a temperature of about +23°C.
  • Drying the seeds just before planting.

Beet planting plan

  • Row spacing: the width should be maintained at 30-40 cm.
  • Distance between seeds: leave a gap of 5-8 cm.
  • Planting depth: 2-3 cm.

Caring for plantings

  • Regular weeding and loosening of the soil.
  • Thinning out seedlings after they emerge.
  • Watering plants 1-2 times a week.
  • Fertilizing 2-3 times throughout the season.

Harvesting

  • Early varieties ripen in 80–110 days;
  • Mid-season - after 110–130;
  • Late ripening – in 130–145 days.

Following these simple rules will allow you to grow a healthy and generous beet harvest.

You should not neglect either the preparation of seeds, or careful planting, or careful care, or timely harvesting, since the final quality and quantity of harvested root crops depend on these factors.

Additional recommendations

1. To increase seed germination, it is recommended to use a growth stimulator solution.
2. To avoid thickening of the plantings, thin out the seedlings in two stages: the first - when 2-3 true leaves are formed, the second - when the leaves begin to close.
3. Use both organic and mineral fertilizers to feed beets.
4. Do not delay harvesting so that the root crops do not overgrow and lose their taste.
