Moles on the site: is it necessary to fight them

Moles like to live wherever there is soft soil, so they often settle in vegetable gardens and orchards.

Gardeners know that this animal has a strong influence on the fertility of the plot.

Firstly, by creating their tunnels at a shallow depth (feeding passages are located 2–5 cm from the surface and are often visible as strips of raised earth), moles damage the roots of cultivated plants located there, which leads to the suppression of all plantings.

Secondly, the animal feeds only on animal food and, although it does not eat roots and tubers, it destroys the population of beneficial earthworms in the area.

The mole also hunts pests - the voracious mole rats eat mole crickets, woodlice, slugs and everything else that gets into their galleries.

It is important to remember that mole holes can become a pathway for other animals, such as voles, which eat vegetation.

Thirdly, by digging passages and making molehills, these small creatures spoil the landscape. This is especially true for owners of decorative lawns.

The soil loosened by the mole, however, is soft, cleared of all harmful insects such as cockchafer larvae and is suitable for plant growth.

A mole in your area is not a disaster, but it is still advisable to get rid of it, because the benefit it brings is less than the undoubted harm it causes.
