Hazelnuts are loved by many people. They have an incredible taste and are very healthy.
To enjoy this nut, you don’t have to buy it in stores or collect it in the forest.
It is quite possible to grow it yourself. But to get good results you need to put in some effort, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .
The question of how to plant hazelnuts correctly, allowing you to collect as many nuts as possible from the bushes, has been on the minds of gardeners for a long time.
The main conditions that have a direct impact on the final result are the following:
• characteristics of the land;
• selected area;
• illumination level.
With proper cultivation of hazelnuts, it is possible to obtain a good plant that will produce abundant harvests every year.
The best choice would be the land in the northwest and northeast of the garden. Often such places have moist and nutrient-rich soil.
The first thing you need to do is find good material with which you can plant and then grow the crop.
Hazelnut propagation can be carried out using various methods. The following are used for this:
• seedlings;
• branches;
• seedling nuts.
It is recommended to grow hazelnuts from seedlings. When choosing to plant seedling nuts, you will have to wait a very long time until you can harvest the first crop. At the same time, you will also need to form branches for the fruiting of the plants.
It is advisable to plant in autumn. The ideal time is October. If it is impossible to plant hazelnuts within the specified time, spring planting is allowed.
This must be done within March.
The main condition is abundant watering of young seedlings. The soil should never be dry.
Full development of hazelnuts is possible only if they are planted in well-fertilized soil. The soil should be constantly kept moist.
Planting can be done in a hole with manure, its liquid solution or with a mixture that includes superphosphate and potassium salt. Fertilizers should be distributed in the upper part of the planting hole and in its middle. The soil where the roots will spread in the future should be compacted.
Before planting, you should straighten the roots and dip them in a mash. After installing the seedling in the ground, its above-ground part is tied to the supports standing near them. The planted plant should be cut, leaving only 20 cm above the ground.
For further cultivation of hazelnuts it is necessary:
• cultivate the soil;
• water the garden bed;
• trim and shape bushes;
• take preventive measures against pests and diseases.
Cultivation of the trunk circle is carried out in the spring and late autumn. At the same time, it is necessary to retreat from the base at least 20 cm. In the autumn, the soil is dug up with the addition of manure. One bush requires about 10 kg of fertilizer.
Weeding the garden bed and irrigating the soil should only be done when necessary. It is important to remember that rapid growth, flowering and good development are possible with sufficient moisture.
The flowering of hazelnut and its ability to bear fruit largely depend on the timely and correct pruning of the bush. During the first years, active growth of hazel roots is observed, and by the age of 4, it already has about 20 developed shoots. Of these, the strongest are selected in the amount of 10 branches.
The first harvest can be expected in the last summer month. You can get nuts only if you follow all the rules for caring for hazelnuts.
