Growing potatoes is a process familiar to every gardener. This crop is one of the main ones on our tables, and we use it in a variety of dishes.
Today we will tell you how to grow potatoes correctly to get a rich harvest.
Expert Anastasia Kovrizhnykh revealed the details.
Before you start growing potatoes, you need to choose the right variety. To do this, consider the climatic conditions of your area and the purpose of cultivation.
For example, if you plan to eat potatoes fresh, then choose early-ripening varieties, and if you want to stock up on potatoes for the winter, then opt for mid-season and late-ripening varieties.
Potatoes love fertile soil, so before planting it is necessary to add organic fertilizers to the soil.
This can be humus or manure, which must be evenly distributed over the entire area. Then the soil is dug to a depth of about 30 cm and leveled with a rake.
Potatoes can be planted both in open ground and in a greenhouse. The main thing is to keep the distance between the bushes, which should be at least 50-60 cm.
The planting depth depends on the soil type: on light soils, potatoes are planted at a depth of 10-12 cm, on heavy soils – at 5-8 cm.
After planting potatoes, it is necessary to water them regularly, weed them and hill them.
Watering should be abundant, but not frequent - 1-2 times a week is enough.
Weeds are removed as they appear, and hilling is carried out 2 weeks after planting and then every 2-3 weeks.
Potatoes are harvested in late summer – early fall. You can tell when potatoes are ready for harvesting by their appearance: the leaves start to turn yellow and fall off, and the tubers become large and hard.
After harvesting, the potatoes must be dried and stored in a cool place.
