One of the most dangerous pests of protected ground plants, the spider mite, is practically invisible to the naked eye.

The pest is detected when it has captured significant areas, by yellowing and wilting leaves, the appearance of cobwebs on the shoots. At this time, it is already difficult to get rid of the tick, but it is worth trying.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explains the remedies against spider mites that are approved for use during the fruiting period.

Not all preparations that destroy standard garden pests are suitable for fighting spider mites. The parasite is an arachnid, not an insect, so not all toxic substances work on it.

According to observations of experienced gardeners, several preparations are the most effective against ticks and safe for humans and animals.

Fitoverm (active agent avermectin C). Fitoverm Forte or Fitoverm M, as more concentrated, are usually used against ticks.

The preparation, when in contact with an adult pest, causes paralysis and death in 2-5 days. The protective effect after treatment inside the greenhouse lasts up to 20 days.

The product is approved for multiple use throughout the growing season, as it does not accumulate in fruits and plant tissues. The waiting period after treatment until harvesting is 2-3 days. The dosage against ticks is 2 g per 1 l of water.

Bitoxybacillin (contains a strain of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis var. Thuringiensis).

Intestinal pesticide, causes digestive disorders of the pest and its rapid death. The maximum effectiveness of the preparation occurs 7-10 days after application.

It is necessary to carry out treatments every 2-3 weeks, dissolving 100 g of the preparation in 10 liters of water.

Belongs to class 3 hazardous substances, the waiting period from spraying to harvest consumption is 3-5 days.

Oil solution. Absolutely harmless to humans, animals and beneficial insects, but lethal to ticks. The scheme of action of the oil solution is based on the biology of the pest's respiration - the tick breathes with the entire surface of its abdomen. If you cover the tick with a film that does not allow air to pass through, it will soon die.

Use regular inexpensive vegetable oil, pouring 2 cups into a bucket of lukewarm water. The coating on the leaves needs to be renewed every 10-14 days.

How to properly treat greenhouse plantings against spider mites

The most important thing is that before applying the poison solution to the plants, you need to remove all yellowed leaves and remove the cobwebs from the shoots with a wet sponge. The cobwebs create a barrier that prevents the solution from getting to the pest.

The plants are treated with a freshly prepared solution using a sprayer or a wide soft brush. All parts of the plant should be irrigated abundantly, especially the underside of the leaves. It is useful to spray the soil in the trunk circle.

Important! Even when working with biological preparations, personal protective measures should be observed – wear glasses, a respirator and gloves.

Preventive measures

Proper prevention can help to significantly reduce the number of pests or get rid of them completely.

Every year, after harvesting, all plant remains are removed from the greenhouse, the soil is dug up. The room is washed with bleach, treated with a sulfur candle, the soil is abundantly irrigated with a solution of Fitoverm.

Freezing the greenhouse in winter helps to destroy overwintering individuals.

In the first half of the growing season, when there are at least 30 days left before harvesting, the plants are treated with colloidal sulfur. It effectively destroys not only spider mites, but also fights fungal diseases. Dosage 10 g per bucket of water.

Crop rotation in the greenhouse, timely weed control, proper watering and fertilizing regimen help to grow vegetables free from harmful insects.
