September is a time when several mandatory operations need to be carried out in the garden.

The summer cottage season is coming to a logical end, and all that remains is to prepare for winter.

What to do in the garden in September

The first thing you need to start with is tidying up perennial plants. You can cut them to the ground and be sure to get rid of dead leaves and remove flower stalks.

Roses continue to bloom in September. However, it is important not to cut the flowers at this time, so as not to provoke the growth of new buds, since the plant must prepare for winter. You should not water them, but do not forget about fertilizing with phosphorus and potassium.

September is the ideal time to plant bulbous plants. In the first half of the month, plant snowdrops and crocuses, in the second half – daffodils and tulips.

The first month of autumn is suitable for pruning trees in the garden: you need to get rid of all diseased and dried branches.

It is also recommended to plant berry bushes in September, for example, currants and gooseberries.
